After 'the whole population of Calafell' had helped her extract her car from the sandy track by the shore, she'd put up at the Miramar Inn, which must have been on the site where now stood the six-storey block I'd judged too expensive. Here her landlord took several hours to complete the forms required to register a foreign guest, since, she tells us, she'd been the first such to stay there. After dark she'd bathed in the sea in front of the inn and, impressed by her description, I too walked beyond the lights of Passeig Marítim to the beach, where, slipping off sandals, I crunched down to the water's edge to paddle in the silky waters of the Mediterranean. The arc of lights around the bay might have been brighter than in the 1940s, but the lap-lap-lap of little waves between the cool sand and the black deeps, together with the silver dancing reflections of a crescent moon, reminded me that even after sixty years of development some things never change.
